What amazing games will you play at your picnic?
Who will you invite?

Howick Primary School

New Zealand Cyclist Skills Training Programme
This educational programme is fully funded by Auckland Transport and is tailored for children in years 5-6. Cyclist training enhances students’ cycling skills and teaches them how to ride their bikes safely. The Grade 1 sessions will be inside school grounds (not on the road).

The training will be delivered by Bigfoot Adventures Ltd. Our qualified instructors are passionate about teaching cycling skills and providing a fun, safe and practical programme. All instructors have undergone police vetting, hold current first aid certificates and have received training specific to this course. In case of an emergency please ensure your contact details are updated with the school.

The course comprises approximately 2 x 1 ½ hour sessions per class which will take place during class time. Ratios for the training will be 1 instructor for up to 15 students. The child’s teacher will also be present.

If you have any questions or concerns about this training, do not hesitate to talk to one of the Bigfoot team on the day. Or contact Adrienne, Cycle Safety Coordinator: 09 444 1446 Info@cyclesafety.co.nz

Education Outside the Classroom – Permission Slip 2016

During the school year your child may be offered the opportunity to participate in group experiences outside the classroom that boost and enrich the school curriculum.  These experiences may be interschool sporting experiences that further develop the Health & Physical Education curriculum, chess tournaments or cultural events such as Choir.  Prior to each event a notice will be sent home with details that include times, venue, transport arrangements and the required equipment and cost.

There may be times when the class goes for a short walk or runs, for example to the post box or for supervised cross country training around the streets near school.

This form once returned and signed will serve as a permission slip for all group Education Outside the Classroom experiences.  However, if you do not wish for your child to participate in any event we ask that you send written advice of the withdrawal.

Whole class and Senior School team trips will require permission at the time of the trip and the cost of these is covered by the activity fee.

Further information regarding any trip can be obtained by contacting your child’s teacher or the teacher in charge of that event.

Regards,

Claire Simpson, Vanessa Brambor, Sophie Robertson

BYOD
Devices will continue to be used to support your child’s learning at HPS.  Remember - there is NO obligation to bring a device to school.  The device can be a laptop or something the size of a Mini iPad or bigger.  More information will be going home about this in the next 2 weeks.  The children will be told when they can start bringing their device to school.

Sport
We will be having sport on Fridays at 2:15pm.  The students will be in teams and the teachers will provide a selection of sports suitable for the summer. e.g. Toucht.  After each game a ‘Player of the Day’ will be chosen (based on qualities such as good sportsmanship). Please feel free to join us!  Children MUST wear their sports gear or they will not be able to participate.  If their gear is dirty they may bring a shirt in their whanau colours, plus a note from home explaining this.

Swimming
We will be swimming for at least the first 6 weeks of term, hopefully longer.  All children must participate in the school swimming programme.  However, if your child is sick or injured please send a note or email to excuse them from that day’s swimming.  A swimming cap must be worn when in the pool, if you do not have one, please ask at the office.

Fitness
We will be having short stretching/fitness sessions straight after the roll during term 1.  Children do not need to be in sports gear for this.

Homework
Every Friday a new sheet comes home with an assignment for the children.  These can be completed either on the computer and emailed to the teacher, in their book, or on paper.  Children also benefit from daily reading, spelling and Mathletics practice.  The first Homework sheet will come home on Friday 12th February.

Assembly
You are kindly invited to join us for assembly on every second Thursday at 2:15pm.  The first one is on Thursday 11th February.

Camp Raglan
Camp will be in the final week of term this year.  A new gear list will go home in a few weeks. If you wish to be a parent helper, please email Claire asap.  There will be a parent meeting for those coming, date to be arranged.  Claire will email those accepted as soon as possible.  Your child’s camp fee MUST be paid as early as possible this term unless arrangements have been made.  Thank you.
